How it was measured
The study uses 250 unbranded questions across 14 shopper topics, written the way a shopper would ask and never naming a brand. We ran them on October 12, 2026.
- Engines. Each question was asked once to ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overview, with live web search, from the United Kingdom. Perplexity is being added as a fifth engine.
- Tracked set. Six retailers (Boots, Superdrug, Sephora, LookFantastic, Cult Beauty, Holland & Barrett) and fourteen brands, scored side by side because a shopper sees both in the same answer.
- Visibility. An answer counts once for a brand if it names the brand anywhere in the text. Names that are also everyday words (Lush, Dove, Boots, Rituals, The Ordinary) count only when written as the brand. Position in the answer is ignored, and a brand that appears only in a cited link's title or URL does not count.
- Citations. Every source URL the engines returned is grouped by domain and tagged as Owned (a tracked brand's or retailer's own site), Retail (other shops, including Google Shopping product cards), Editorial & review, Health & public bodies (the NHS, government and medical bodies), Community, or Other.
- Ranges. Each visibility figure has a 95% Wilson interval. When two brands' ranges overlap, treat them as tied.
- AI Overview coverage. Google showed no AI Overview for 36 questions, so those are left out of its denominator.
The questions were written around ethical, naturally inspired bath, body and skincare, and checked so that none names a brand, a retailer or a brand's own product terms. Every tracked name is scored the same way.
