The playbook Moonrank's SEO Agent uses to turn competitor backlinks into the shortest outreach list there is — the sites that have already decided they link to businesses like yours.
Download the methodology, see the priority and attainability formulas, or run it live inside the SEO Agent.
The Competitor Backlink Gap skill is how Moonrank's SEO Agent builds a link prospect list from evidence. It pulls every domain that links to your competitors and not to you, cuts the spam, classifies each prospect's link type, and scores it twice — on value, from authority, topical fit and how many competitors it already endorses; and on attainability, from how gettable that kind of link is.
The two scores make the matrix that decides where outreach starts. And it marks the add-me candidates — resource pages and lists that already name two or more competitors — because a page that lists three rivals will add a fourth, while a journalist will not rewrite an article.
It's written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to build your own prospect list, hand it to an outreach team as the scoring model, or let the SEO Agent pull and rank the gap for your workspace.
“Who links to our competitors but not to us?”
847 domains across three competitors, 612 after the spam ceiling, 200 ranked. Fourteen are add-me candidates — resource pages and 'best of' lists that already name two of your three rivals — and those come first. The top prospect is a tools directory at authority 71 linking to all three. One competitor holds 380 exclusive referring domains, which is where the gap lives. Start with the twenty at priority 60 and above, dofollow first.
Tracked competitors by default or up to five named; broad or shortlist; a spam ceiling.
Every domain linking to a competitor and not to you, with authority, spam, overlap and freshness.
Link type per prospect, then a value score and an attainability score for each.
The priority matrix, the add-me candidates, the top ten, and where the gap lives per competitor.
Every referring domain across the competitors, junk cut before scoring.
Directory, resource page, guest post, forum, editorial, sponsorship, badge, unknown.
Value from authority, fit and overlap; attainability from how gettable the link is.
Where to start, the long game, the quick wins, and what to skip.
